Partners were present at ECAI 2024, in Santiago the Compostela, Spain, presenting studies and papers that will be uploaded in the dedicated section of our website. In particular they took part in three events:

A workshop on creativity: CREAI 2024 - International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Creativity (invited talk by VIU) 

A workshop on history: Workshop on the History of AI in Europe (WHAI@EU)  

A panel on history: 50th Anniversary Session on the History of AI in Europe

Partners were largely involved in BNAIC 2024, in Utrecht, presenting studies and papers that will be uploaded in the dedicated section of our website. BNAIC/BeNeLearn is the reference AI & ML conference for Belgium, Netherlands & Luxembourg. It took place from November 18th to November 20th in Utrecht, Netherlands. The combined conference was organized by Utrecht University under the auspices of the Benelux Association for Artificial Intelligence (BNVKI) and the Netherlands Research School for Information and Knowledge Systems (SIKS).

VUA and VIU will be part of the What should AI do next? Symposium with inaugural lectures of new foreign members that will take place at the Royal Library in Brussels

"Recently AI has moved from a small corner of computer science into the full spotlight, grabbing almost daily headlines with new achievements and recognition, even with two Nobel prizes this year. Although the impact of AI is already very high and widespread, there are clear limitations and there is much application potential that has not been addressed yet. This symposium brings together three distinguished scientists in the fields of AI, Complex Systems Science, and Evolutionary Biology. Based on their excellence and scientific leadership they are being incorporated as foreign members in the section for Natural Sciences of the Academy. At this symposium they will talk about the breakthroughs they themselves have achieved in their own discipline and reflect on the potential they see for future AI in the advancement of science and society".

At VUB, in Brussels, Sony and VIU met the host for a lecture on the limitations of generative AI: "Generative AI, like ChatGPT, has surged ahead in recent years, and there’s no sign of it slowing down. New applications appear daily, from text production to scientific research, and the use of this technology continues to grow rapidly. Yet, it's crucial to pause and consider the boundaries of these digital "superbrains". How far can they go? What are their limitations? And how reliable are they in their current form? On 8 November, the VUB hosted the seminar "Limits of Generative AI", as part of the Willy Calewaert Chair, held by Prof. Dr. Emeritus Luc Steels". More info at this link. 

 

Muhai partners took part in the workshop "A Paradigm Shift in Computer Science?" during the  Conference Digital Humanism AI at TU Wien.
A workshop focusing on the challenges for computer science and the sciences in general, moving from logic and algorithmic certainty to probability and LLMs. Full information at this link.

The Digital Media Lab Bremen recently hosted the REACT workshop, focusing on Responsible and Ethical AI in Conversational User Interface (CUI) Technologies. Organized by Nima Zargham, Thomas Mildner, and Professor Rainer Malaka, the event brought together a distinguished group of researchers from Eindhoven University of Technology, University College Dublin, and Stockholm University.

A highlight of the workshop was the engaging contributions by speakers such as Benjamin Cowan, Minha Lee, and Robert Porzel. Professors Porzel and Malaka, both actively involved in the EU-funded MUHAI (Meaning and Understanding in Human-centric AI) project, offered unique insights into the intersection of AI, responsibility, and conversational technologies.

The workshop fostered transdisciplinary collaboration by bridging perspectives from academia, design, and industry, sparking dynamic discussions and innovative ideas. Attendees explored new pathways for advancing AI research while addressing ethical and responsible approaches in the field.

 

Scientific coordinator Luc Steel will participate in the VII Frontiers Scientific Dialogue titled "Technological disruption: social challenges of the Artificial Intelligence revolution" It will take place at the Reial Acadèmia de Cièncias i Arts, Barcelona and by zoom.
